Overnight in Mont Saint-Michel (Oct. 22-23, 2025)

Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island about a kilometer (0.6 mi) off the coast of northwestern France in the Normandy region.  At its top is an abbey where--according to legend--construction began in 708 AD after the Archangel Michael appeared three times to the bishop of Avranches.

It takes just over four hours to get there by car so it's a doable day trip if you're driving, but we were taking a bus so it made more sense to stay there overnight.  It was $215 for one night--not exactly cheap, but we saved around $140 by reserving it through Booking.com (plus had breakfast included).

Our Flixbus let us off near the Information Center, then we walked a bit to the nearby bus stop where a free shuttle took us to Mont Saint-Michel.

Another street view (in the morning).  There's really only one street on the island, filled with restaurants and souvenir shops.  Aside from clergy, no one lives here.  I saw a bus that took all the workers home for the day.

Here's a view of the crowds.  I'm glad we didn't come at high season.

We had breakfast provided by the hotel--which we usually don't do when it's an extra charge since you can usually do better in town.  We planned on that here, but were informed during check-in that it was included in our stay.  I think we have Booking to thank for that.

No photos of the breakfast, but it was in a restaurant nearby and was pretty good.  This morning we are touring the abbey and in order to avoid crowds, I booked the first one at 9:30 am.  I wasn't the only one with this idea, unfortunately.

The hotel allowed us to leave our luggage there while we explored, and since we'd seen about everything here, we picked them up and headed back to the mainland for lunch and to wait for our Flixbus back to Paris.  There was a great information center where we hung out until it arrived.

I would certainly recommend a visit to this place though not necessarily stay overnight.  It was a good experience, but another reason we stayed was that the bus got there around 1:00 pm and the return was just after 4:00.  I'm glad we didn't rush it, but if you're driving you could do it in a day.
