More Sightseeing (Oct 13, 2025)

Just like at home, I am usually the one who's up first.  That means I scope out the area for eateries, have an espresso or two, and this time ride around on the metro with my pass (more on that later).

I was feeling philosophical

Avenue of the Republic

Later, Fe and I started out by visiting the Galeries Lafayette--not to shop, but to admire the building.

Fe and I on the 'glasswalk".  This was free, but you had to get a ticket for a timed visit.

Another thing the place is known for is its rooftop observation deck.  The large building at the center is the back of the Opera, or Palais Garnier.

Another view.  Too bad it was so cloudy.

We walked over to the Opera that we saw from above.  This was on my list of things to see, but unfortunately they were reconstructing the facade and it was covered up.

Next was the Arc de Triomphe, something we saw the last time but only quickly.  Did not go to the top, but we did see a lot more of the details and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

There are four sculptures on the monument:

Le Triomphe de 1810

La Resistance de 1814

Le Paix de 1815

La Marseilles

I'll channel my inner Rick Steeves here--the monument is in the center of a very busy twelve-lane roundabout.  If you visit, don't be the tourist that tries to run across traffic to get to it.  There's an underground walkway to get there safely and it isn't hard to find with all the signage.  I still saw a few people run across.  No incidents, but there was honking which is probably why they go home and say the French are rude.

We did walk along the Champs Élysée a bit.  We also ate at the McDonald's--don't judge.  I like them here better than at home and since we did this last time, I've decided it's a tradition.

Louis Vuitton store.  Made to look like luggage.

Tomorrow we'll continue visiting places we saw last time, but also mix in some things we missed.

We left Annecy by bus ( Flixbus ) for the roughly two-hour trip to Lyon.  I'm glad we transferred here last week when we went to Annecy-...
