We had heard of this town through YouTube travel videos and one of the things we really wanted to see was the Hospices des Beaune, or Hôtel Dieu. It was inaugurated in 1443 and remained a hospital until 1971. It is now a museum. We started with this in the hopes of avoiding the daytrip crowds--we were partially successful.
On the train to Beaune
There was a cat on the train. I've noticed that the French take their pets with them many places Americans don't--trains, subways, grocery stores, and shopping centers.

This was a full day. Beaune is 45 km (28 mi) south of Dijon so it was only a half-hour train ride, but after all the walking we were glad to get back to our apartment. We really liked this little town though (it's less touristy than Dijon) and we both agreed it may have been better to stay here and make it our base. Maybe next time.
